Hi,
Welcome to another edition of Career
Communiqué x-Press.
For x-Press readers who are parents, I’m sure you have had moments when you have been particularly proud of your children and their achievements. My eldest daughter has always loved sports and due to her natural gifted talents, has been involved in numerous sporting activities from a very young age. In fact, she is one of those people that may not have had specific coaching or training in a sport, however can pick it up in a short amount of time, so-much-so that you would think she had been training in that particular sport for years. Well, she recently was honoured with the Sports Captaincy at school, being selected out of hundreds of hopeful candidates. To say she was over the moon would be an understatement.
My youngest daughter however has been blessed with gifts and talents in singing and drama – she’s the actor in the family who can recite entire movie scenes, word-for-word, along with the accent and mannerisms of the character. She has enjoyed participating in school drama activities and school productions over the years. However, this year she has been given the lead role of Cinderella (out of numerous budding Oscar-winning hopefuls), in the upcoming school production. She too, was ecstatic.
So over the past few weeks, we have had much to celebrate in terms of achievements in our family. I am one very proud mother! However one of the things that make this so special is that both of my children are doing something that they are totally passionate about, excelling in what they are involved in because they are tapping into their unique gifts, talents and strengths.
Are you passionate about what you are doing at work? Are excelling in your performance however doing so easily and effortlessly because you are tapping into your unique talents and strengths? Discovering your passion and purpose with 4 key principles of the Purposeful Careers model: Dream, Clarify, Believe, Achieve.
Stage 1 – Dream.
Just as embarking on a holiday without any preparation or planning would have you driving aimlessly in circles never quite reaching your destination, so too does not having a vision, a target, or intention with your job and career. How can we possibly begin to work towards our goals and our dreams if we don’t have a clear vision of where we want to be?
One of my favourite sayings is ‘Where your attention goes your energy flows’, which means that what you are putting your attention, energy and focus on, is what you are creating and manifesting in your life.
Without a clear vision of what you want your life, job and career to be like, unfortunately you will be left with what you are currently experiencing in your job, which is probably uncertainty, doubt, dissatisfaction, annoyance, and frustration. With all your thoughts and attention centring on these negative emotions, guess where your focus and energy are diverted towards? It’s preoccupied with exactly the emotions and experiences that you want to move away from, namely uncertainty, doubt, dissatisfaction, annoyance, and frustration.
The Purposeful Careers dreaming stage will allow you to answer key questions around how you anticipate the way you want to see your life so that you can realign your focus, energy and attention towards positive thoughts and emotions. These positive feelings, thoughts and emotions replace any doubt and dissatisfaction with clarity, contentment and fulfilment and will support you in creating and experiencing your purpose-driven career.
Stage 2 – Clarify.
The lack of self-awareness and understanding is one of the major factors that prompt people to either move from one job to another, or remain stuck in a job that is uninspiring, unfulfilling and void of anything that resembles passion, true calling and alignment with their life’s purpose.
I cannot stress enough the importance of enhancing your self-awareness to support you in discovering your passion and life’s purpose. This is why the clarify stage in the Purposeful Careers program is the longest, containing eight crucial steps allowing participants to gain a greater understanding of themselves.
For many people, this information in itself can be life altering, as they begin to understand what drives them, why they react in certain ways, what makes them unique and the impact this can have with the work choices they make. They become clearer on their work interests and work activities, and what inspires and enriches their day versus tasks that seem to drain them of their energy.
By understanding your values you too will be able to see why when certain things occur in the workplace it can make a huge impact on you, perhaps through raising feelings of discomfort. It is important for you to consider your values when selecting a company or industry as, if the organisation’s values clash with your own, you will only end up having to compromise on what is important to you, again causing disillusionment, dissatisfaction and disappointment.
The clarify stage in the Purposeful Careers program will also support you in gaining awareness around industry and career opportunities, also a quite significant factor when planning your future career path.
Stage 3 – Believe.
Even with a well thought out and structured plan, barriers and blocks can still prevent you from moving toward your goals, thus keeping you stuck in your present situation. Sometimes this can occur unknowingly (on an unconscious level) with not-so-helpful beliefs being carried with you from childhood – preventing you from reaching your goals, ambitions, dreams and purposeful career.
Negative internal thoughts and unhelpful mindsets can also be a sign of fear. A few of the most common fears that prevent people from achieving their goals can include:
|
§ |
Fear of success.
|
|
§ |
Fear of failure. |
|
§ |
Fear of abandonment/rejection. |
|
§ |
Fear of the unknown. |
|
§ |
Fear of being judged. |
|
§ |
Fear of fear. |
|
Omitting this important step may mean that people remain in their uninspiring role as they fail to work through blocks and barriers. Barriers could include:
Procrastination:
You defer or
avoid taking action towards leaving your
existing role.
Fear of the
unknown:
You would
rather stay with what you know (your
current, though boring, job) than what you
don’t know.
Rationalising:
Generating
many excuses as to why it’s not going to
work and actually believing and feeling
comfortable with these statements.
Avoidance:
Spending too
much time on tasks that should not take long
at all, thus avoiding having to think about
or move forward to the task that may seem a
little overwhelming.
Busyness:
Creating chaos
and confusion and becoming so busy that you
are continually being distracted from your
real goal. This can also manifest itself as
procrastination, where you attend to
everything BUT what you should really be
working on.
Some people may experience an unhelpful thought for a fleeting moment but move on quickly, not allowing the negativity to consume them. However, for those people who are continually experiencing negative thoughts that block them from moving forward, there may be a need to look at why this is occurring and how they will change those negative internal thoughts into more constructive and positive ones. Which person do you most resemble?
The third stage of the Purposeful Careers program will allow you to explore potential barriers and with the powerful tools and techniques offered you will be able to begin breaking through the barriers that are keeping you from living and experiencing your purposeful career.
Stage 4 – Achieve.
How often do we reflect on and establish
resolutions for the things we want to change
in our lives, however even though we set off
with dedication and commitment that we are
going to see our goals through to fruition,
we end up failing miserably?
Perhaps you may have decided to look for a new job, or that it was time to dust off those runners (the shoes you bought at the end of 2004 which are still sitting at the very back of your closet) and get fit, or even to lose some of those extra pounds that have crept up over the past few years. Does this ring true for you?
Unfortunately, a number of studies have shown that less than 10% of people who set resolutions ever achieve them. Are you one of the 90% who make resolutions at the end of each year with 110% commitment, only to find as the year progresses you stray and eventually lose sight of your goal? Have you been putting up with something that you really want to change? What has settling for second best been costing you emotionally, physically or spiritually?
NLP states that whatever we think, say or do will become our reality. Therefore we need to be extremely vigilant in what we ‘tell ourselves’ verbally, through our actions, or even through our thoughts. Our unconscious minds are in the background ever eavesdropping on what we (and others) say. “Oh, you’ve been making the same resolution to lose weight for the past 2 years. What’s going to make this year different?” Or, “You’ll never leave your job – you’ve been saying that you want to leave over the past 18 months, and you’re still there.” Does that sound familiar?
The fourth and last stage of the Purposeful Careers program – achieve - will provide you with a structure to support you in maintaining momentum and unwavering commitment allowing you to not only have the finish line in your sights, but to cross over it with confidence.
As Herber J. Grant said, “Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice.” Goal planning, positive intentions and taking action are the three critical steps in the achieve stage, presenting you with powerful tools and techniques that can only continue to strengthen your journey as you begin to move towards your purposeful career.
